Background to ArtsEd

ArtsEd originated from two schools, one founded in 1919 by Grace Cone and one founded in 1922 by Olive Ripman. These two educational pioneers believed passionately in the value of combining a general academic education with specialised training in dance, drama, music and art. They were committed to preparing young people for professional careers in or related to the theatre.  In 1939, Grace and Olive joined forces to create the Cone Ripman School, subsequently named the Arts Educational Schools. Dame Alicia Markova and Sir Anton Dolin drew almost exclusively on ArtsEd students to help them create their revolutionary company London Festival Ballet, which eventually became the English National Ballet. Ballerina Dame Beryl Grey became Director of the Schools in the 1960s. ArtsEd continued to innovate, introducing both professional acting and musical theatre courses and in I986 moved to its present home in Chiswick.  In 2007, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber became President, heralding an auspicious new era for ArtsEd.  The School of Musical Theatre and School of Acting offer full-time BA and MA courses. Our Musical Theatre course is recognised as the best in the UK, while the Acting course is praised for its innovative 50:50 split between stage and screen acting.  Our outstanding record of graduate success sees nearly every one of our Musical Theatre graduates and over three-quarters of our Acting graduates make their professional debuts within six months of graduating.

Summary of the role

  • To ensure the efficient, safe, and effective provision of high-quality gym instruction to students.
  • To deliver a range of high-quality services to students within Higher Education with an emphasis on assessing students’ physical health needs and referring as appropriate to relevant colleagues and external services and agencies
  • To design and deliver individual and group health & nutrition advice and support to students on a range of physical and mental health issues.

Key Responsibilities

To provide a gym service daily during term times (approx. 33 weeks per year)
To ensure the efficient, safe, and effective provision of high-quality gym instruction
To support student fitness programmes in relation to their specific training
To liaise with Dance tutors to ensure cohesion of training
To teach in gym classes for Foundation MT students and Foundation Actors.
To liaise with the resident Physio to enhance student rehabilitation
To ensure the service structure matches the requirements of both the Degree, the National Qualification, and the professional accrediting bodies
To carry out a termly inventory of all gym equipment
To complete visual documented daily checks of all equipment before use by students
To complete a robust, documented check of all fitness equipment weekly including free weights, benches, and any stand-alone accessories
To ensure that all Gym use always conforms to H&S legislation, and to work with the Head of Facilities as and when required in relation to carrying out Risk Assessments and introducing control measures to keep the environment safe for use.
To provide informal assessments on physical and mental health needs of students presenting themselves and to offer high quality advice and support whilst making suitable internal and external referrals according to individual needs
To collate and maintain accurate student records in accordance with the Data Protection Act, guidance from professional bodies and current policies and procedures
To collaborate with the completion of departmental reports, and other administrative tasks in line with set procedures
To contribute where appropriate to policy development and examination of student wellbeing and to keep up to date on issues and developments in higher education, both generally and specifically
To report on all matters related to the role and to undertake any other duties, commensurate with the post
To work with the senior management team and to be involved in assessment and evaluation of student health and wellbeing/disability provision and delivery to review and improve the effectiveness of the support offered
To establish effective working relationships with schools, academic departments, services, and other relevant teams to ensure effective support for students
To assist in delivering the health promotion and wellbeing strategy at ArtsEd and to implement health promotion and wellbeing interventions, campaigns, and workshops on a wide range of health issues

Secondary Duties 

To monitor and assess the physical health of students
To manage, appraise and record the progress of student’s fitness levels
To work with the Head of Student Support and Engagement to formulate and review plans for the delivery of the gym curriculum in advance of the academic year
To carry out physical and documented induction with all new students for each piece of equipment
To undertake such reasonable duties as may be requested from time to time by the Head of Student Support and Engagement and other senior colleague

Person Specification


  • The post holder must hold a Level 3 Qualification in Fitness  Instruction and Personal Training or equivalent
  • The post holder must be REPS registered
  • The post holder should have a first aid qualification (training will be provided as necessary)


  • Mental Health First Aider
  • Experience and/or understanding of working with students in a performing arts context, or working within theperforming arts sector
  • A qualification in health and/or nutrition

Skills and Experience 

  • Experience or knowledge of working in Higher Education or Further Education
  • Experience in providing support, information, and advice to groups
  • Experience of implementing and managing exercise referral programmes
  • Ability to supervise groups of users in a fitness suite or exercise environment
  • Ability to work flexibly
  • Ability to meet agreed objectives on work performance
  • Empathetic to students needs
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team
  • Willingness and ability to contribute to own learning and development and undertake training as required
  • Commitment to and an understanding of equality and diversity issues within a diverse and multi-cultural higher education environment
