Summary of the role

 

This post is one of the most senior appointments within ArtsEd, one of Britain’s leading drama schools. We are committed to changing the way that performers are trained for the modern industry. The person appointed must have a balance of professional and teaching skills in order to ensure that ArtsEd remains a leader in the world of professional Musical Theatre training. The School of Musical Theatre currently offers a BA (Hons) and Cert HE which are validated by City, University of London. The current intake is 50 BA (Hons) & 30 Foundation students per year, with some funding via the Dance and Drama Awards scheme. There is also an active programme of outreach and short-course activity.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead on and ensure the efficient, safe and effective provision of high-quality Dance coaching in line with a world-class drama training in Musical Theatre
  • Look to continue to improve, deepen, develop and diversify the current dance training at ArtsEd.
  • To keep the course content current and forward thinking within an ever-changing industry.
  • Schedule Dance Assessments within the timetable.
  • Lead and manage dance tutors and their timetables
  • Lead and manage Head Pianist and their timetable
  • Ensure the curriculum and course structure matches the requirements of the Degree, the National Qualification, and the professional accrediting bodies
  • Monitor Student attendance
  • Teach in one or more of the following disciplines: Ballet, Jazz, Tap Pas De Deux, and Contemporary Dance to Musical Theatre Students across Years 1,2 and 3
  • Choreograph/Devise Year 1 Dance Projects in consultation with the Director of the School of Musical Theatre
  • Ensuring provision of additional learning support for Musical Theatre Students
  • Monitor and assess the physical health of students, in consultation with the in-house physio.
  • Take part in auditions for the selection of students
  • Manage, appraise and record the progress of students
  • With the Director of Musical Theatre, formulate and review plans for the delivery of the Dance curriculum in advance of the academic year.
  • Maintain and develop links with the musical theatre profession including individual artists and companies.
  • Support the maintenance of discipline amongst the student body
  • Undertake tutorials with 1st Years
  • Assist the Director of Musical Theatre with 1st Years career development
  • Assist the Director of Musical Theatre with casting 3rd Year Productions
  • Represent Musical Theatre School at performances, liaising with Casting Directors, Agents and industry personnel.
  • Carrying out annual appraisals of staff you line manage

Line management responsibility for 

Senior Dance Tutor, Head Pianist (Ballet), all Dance tutors (both employed and freelance visiting creatives), third year production choreographers (in consultation with Director of the School of Musical Theatre, who has the ultimate responsibility for staffing third year productions).
