Teacher of Musical Theatre and Musical Director

Summary of the role:

The successful candidate will be joining a highly talented Performing Arts Team many of whom bring industry experience to the department of 26 teachers and 11 peripatetic staff.  Working as part of this team, you will support the Head of Musical Theatre in the planning and delivery of the musical theatre curriculum; this includes Key Stages 3 and 4, and 6^th Form. An integral part of this is the planning, preparation, rehearsal and performance of large and small scale productions within the Performing Arts.

Role responsibilities:

• To plan and teach Musical Theatre classes to students on the KS4 and BTEC Musical Theatre Pathways and assist with Musical Theatre department productions.
• To direct and accompany vocal groups at rehearsals, and in both live and recorded performances.
• To prepare students for external auditions for H.E. Conservatoire training, NYMT, and agreed professional work.
• To coach and prepare cast members for performances.
• To participate in the ArtsEd audition process including accompanying candidates.
• To work with the Head of Musical Theatre on unit delivery and execute suitable schemes of work across the department within the curriculum and framework of the examination boards.
• To write vocational subject reports and keep records of internal vocational assessments.
• To contribute to the Musical Theatre assessment calendar.
• To mark work set in relation to the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 course mark scheme.

The ideal candidate must be:

• Experienced and confident Musical Director.
• A skilled pianist with the ability to sightread to a high standard.

Qualifications

• A relevant Degree or Diploma
• QTS (Desirable)

Knowledge

The knowledge required by the Applicant to perform effectively in the role:

• An excellent knowledge of Musical Theatre (current trends and historical context) with a clear ability to teach and inspire using a range of teaching strategies relevant to the subject.
• An excellent knowledge of Musical Theatre repertoire.
• Significant and up-to-date knowledge of a variety of technical singing pedagogy.
• A firm understanding of how to enhance the vocal skills of students ranging from Y7-13
• Confident keyboard skills
• Familiarity with current best practice.
• A good knowledge of assessment procedures relating to the specialist area.
• A sound knowledge of the Edexcel BTEC Performing Arts specification is desirable but not essential.

Experience

The categories of work or organisations, types of achievements and activities that would be in the role:

• Relevant teaching experience, preferably in a co-educational environment.
• Relevant experience of musical direction including leading a band for performance.
• Relevant experience of nurturing young voices.
• Professional vocational experience is desirable but not essential.

Skills and abilities

The skills required by the Applicant to perform effectively in the role:

• Excellent and experienced teacher of Musical Theatre in both one-to-one and group classes.
• Experienced and confident Musical Director.
• A skilled pianist with the ability to sightread to a high standard.
• Ability to organise and integrate own specialism into the study of relevant units withing the BTEC performing arts specification and the KS4 Musical Theatre pathway.
• Ability to design and implement an exciting and creative Musical Theatre programmes for Y7-13 students.
• Ability to inspire and develop young students.
• Evidence of first-class teaching skills.
• Effective classroom/studio manager.
