Applications and Auditions

What is the difference between the BA (Hons) and the Level 6 Diploma in Musical Theatre?

Both qualifications pertain to the same 3-Year course. Students wishing to register for the BA degree are required to pay an additional one-off payment of approximately £547.12.

How many people are accepted and how many do you audition?

We have an intake of around 50 students each year from approximately 1,500 applications.

How do you apply for the course and what do I need to do at my audition?

Do you take students from overseas?

We welcome students from across the globe but please bear in mind that non-EU students need to have a student visa. Candidates whose first language is not English must provide proof of their English proficiency by having achieved a TOEFL score of 6 or higher.

Will disability affect my application?

No – but please notify us of any access needs or special requirements prior to your audition.

Are you able to audition via video or DVD?

International students may be allowed to audition via video in exceptional circumstances.

Do you hold any open days?

Our audition day is an open day and our public productions are a fantastic way of seeing the results of our excellent training at first hand.

Is entry via UCAS?

No, entry is through direct application and audition.

Do you have to have any specific exam results or grades to be able to apply?

I’ve only been singing and dancing for a couple of years but really want to study musical theatre, do I have enough experience to apply for the course?

Absolutely – we are looking for talent, potential and ‘trainability’.

When is the closing date for receipt of applications?

March 2019, for entry in September of the same year.

When do you hold auditions and can we choose when we want to audition?

Auditions are generally held on Tuesdays from October to April during term time. If we offer you a date please do your best to attend. We can only reschedule under extreme circumstances such as illness or an exam commitment.

I have already done a year on a different course but don’t like it, am I able to transfer onto the ArtsEd course and go straight into the second year?

No, the ArtsEd course is a three-year training programme and unique to other institutions. You must complete all three years.

What’s the minimum and maximum applicant age?

You need to be 18 when the course commences, there is no maximum age.

 

Life at ArtsEd

Are there any residential halls for new students?

No. The school will send an accommodation list with details of local letting agents. The majority of students live locally in rented accommodation, sharing flats and houses.

How do I find people to live with?

Students looking for flat shares often find accommodation through student postings on social network sites.If you are offered a place at the school you wiII find it usefuI to Iink up with the ArtsEd community via Facebook and Twitter.

What would I expect to pay for rent in the area?

The average rent for a room in a shared house is between £100-150 a week.

Is there a canteen at school and what’s the average price for lunch?

There is an ArtsEd canteen and you can generally eat lunch for under £5.

Are you allowed to have a part time job whilst studying?

Yes, but the course is very intensive, so you will need to take this into account.

Is there a physiotherapist at the school and if so do we have to pay for this and when is the physio available?

We have visits from a physiotherapist two or three times a week at a heavily discounted rate

What support does the college offer to any injuries I may sustain during the course?

In addition to our physiotherapist we have a fitness tutor for rehabilitation and can provide access to an Osteopathic consultant and a teacher trained in Alexander Technique. We also offer a free counselling service.

What is Chiswick like?

Chiswick is a leafy suburb in London, zone 2. It has a vibrant shopping, café and bar culture and is well connected with tubes and buses into central London.

How many holidays do we have, are they like university holidays?

The training is usually based on three terms of 11 weeks with a half term in the middle.

Is there an anti-bullying policy?

Bullying is not tolerated at any level. Nor does the School discriminate on the grounds of race, colour, ethnic or national origins, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, disability, religious beliefs or age.

What sort of pastoral care is available?

There is a Year Head for each of the three years and one for the Foundation students. We have an open door policy and are always here for the students. You can contact a senior member of staff at most times of the day.

How much assistance will I receive in organising my finances?

You will need to organise your own finances but you may find the Fees and Funding section useful.

 

Course Information

What does a typical timetable look like and how is the day structured?

Very full! You will be given a sign in time 15 minutes before your start time. This could be as early as 8:00am and no later than 8:45am. You have classes or rehearsals all day, five days a week from 8.45am (or sometimes earlier) to 6pm and sometimes beyond. You will then have work to prepare for the following day. You could be going from an acting class straight into ensemble singing straight into jazz followed by Speech & Voice and 1-2-1 singing!

Are there many males on the course?

Approximately 55% of our current intake is male.

How strict is it going to be?

Musical Theatre training is rigorous – you are learning three skills. We train people to be professional, focused, hardworking performers. This takes dedication and passion. Is it strict? That's up to you and your work ethic!

What are the acting classes like?

The acting classes are an exciting way of exploring your own creative process. Through exercises, workshops and text work you will work towards releasing your imagination and developing your own methods of creating truthful, exciting and bold performances.

How is the timetable split between dancing, acting and singing?

This is a ‘triple threat' course, so the weighting is totally equal between acting, singing and dance.

At what stage in the course do we get to perform?

You will perform to an internal audience each year, but you do not perform in public until the third year when you will take part in fully staged, professionally staffed musicals before a paying audience. These shows will take place in one of our two theatres plus you will have the opportunity to perform in the West End before an audience of agents.

How many one to one singing lessons does a student get each week?

Two.

Is there any written work?

There are no formal essays but you will have to complete a journal on one performance project in years one and two, and a production journal in year three.

I’m dyslexic, is there much support for me at the school?

Yes, we offer a range of support for a variety of learning needs, including dedicated staff members, SpLD Study Skills Support and Disability Allowance (DSA).

Do we get to go on any organised theatre trips to see shows and if so do we have to pay for these?

We do not formally organise theatre trips but due to our strong industry links we are offered complimentary or reduced price tickets for many productions which we make available to students.

Do you do any dance syllabus work? Can you take exams?

No we don’t offer that. The course is a BA (Hons) Musical Theatre (validated by City, University of London) and Diploma in Professional Musical Theatre (validated by Trinity College)

 

Funding

Are all the materials for college included in the fees?

You will need to set aside funds for books and dance wear and for any photocopied material for shows.  We try to keep photocopied material to a minimum, but you may choose to copy songs for your own repertoire.

How do I qualify for a DaDA?

DaDAs are awarded to the most talented auditionees but their financial circumstances are also taken into consideration.

How long will I have to wait to find out if I have been given funding?

Unfortunately there is no hard and fast rule regarding this as sometimes auditionees are offered funding straight away but more often than not we cannot make a decision until all of our auditions have finished. Once the auditions have finished we can look at who has the most potential and offer them funding. Unfortunately we are not able to offer funding to everyone who is offered a place.

If you get a DaDA are you still eligible for maintenance benefits?

A form will be sent to enable you to apply for a means tested DaDA maintenance grant.
