Musical Theatre Foundation Course

ArtsEd offers a dynamic one-year full-time Foundation Course. It is taught by the team responsible for the school’s prestigious BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre and designed by Chris Hocking, Principal and Director of the School of Musical Theatre.

The course is recognised by City, University of London and offers an outstanding Musical Theatre experience. Graduate students have recently received offers for degree courses at ArtsEd, Mountview, Institute of Art Barcelona, Central School of Speech and Drama, Trinity Laban Conservatoire, Royal Conservatoire Scotland, Bird College, GSA, New York Film School, LSMT, Urdang Academy and PPA, with several students being offered scholarships and fee reductions.

Develop Your Skills at Foundation Level

This course is tailored to meet the needs of students from 18+ who have the vocal talent to pursue a degree level training in musical theatre but need to develop skills in dancing and acting before securing a place on a triple threat degree-level training. It runs across three terms of 13, 11 and six weeks respectively, allowing time in the third term to accommodate drama school auditions. We have an intake of one or two groups with no more than 25 students per group. Entry is selective, based on an audition process.

'During our audition process for the BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre we encounter a number of talented students who may shine vocally, but by comparison with fellow students may need to develop their acting and/or dancing skills in order to secure a place on a three year course.

'This full-time foundation course enables aspiring BA students to develop and hone their entire performance skills set, enabling them to approach auditions from a strong starting point. Participation in this foundation course will not guarantee a place on our full-time three-year BA programme, but it will mean that aspiring undergraduates are fulfilling their potential to the maximum and can compete with confidence for a place on our courses or those of other drama schools.'
Chris Hocking, Principal and Director of the School of Musical Theatre.

The course runs from 9am to 5pm, five days a week. Dance training includes jazz and ballet. Singing involves ensemble and individual tuition while acting training features improvisation and text work as well as voice and speech classes. This comprehensive course also includes modules on audition technique, fitness training, professional practice and tutorials on the development of Musical Theatre.
