Back in March this year, ArtsEd alumni were delighted to take part in a musical extravaganza at The Other Palace to celebrate the Orpheus Centre's 20th birthday.

Recent ArtsEd graduates involved were; Alex Wheeler, Ben Stacey, Simon Bolland, Lauren Oakley, Georgie Westall, Sarah Day, Hampus Engstrand, Poppy Andrews, Siobhan Diffin and Benjamin Mundy, and they performed Sir Richard Stilgoe's Orpheus - The Mythical alongside alumni and current students from the Orpheus Centre; a pioneering disabilities charity. This show highlighted the work they are doing with young disabled adults who have a passion for the performing arts.

This witty musical comedy of a Greek tragedy wowed audiences, with each night opened by a Greek chorus, played by a celebrity guest. In the line up were; Martin Jarvis, Rob Brydon, Patricia Hodge, Jane Asher, Charles Collingwood, Judy Bennett, Samuel West, Bertie Carvel, Barry Cryer, Jim Carter and Imelda Staunton – a truly impressive list of stars! They were joined by a wonderfully diverse cast, including a singing three-headed dog made up of three Orpheus students: Rory Dyer, Tyler Russell, Nick Walewski, a chanting Sat-Nav played by Jo Langston and a funny northern Hercules, played by Chris Hogg.

As a result, Orpheus – The Mythical was met with rave reviews. The National Student commented:

“The story is stunning and hilarious. Jokes are given a modern twist, and the actors from both schools are thoroughly professional and enjoyable to watch … The music is fantastic. Morton has a powerful voice worthy of the Orpheus character … Every single actor, around 30 in all, does a marvellous job to provide a witty, thought provoking story and deservedly received a standing ovation from every single audience member.”

And the best news is, you can enjoy this Greek comedy from the comfort of your own home this Christmas! Give someone a present they can cherish, and purchase the DVD from the Orpheus online shop, or stream/download!
