Peripatetic Singing Teacher

Responsible to: Head of Music (Line Manager) & Head of Singing (Lesson Content)
Hours: Part time (One day p.w. initially with possibility of more or less depending on student uptake term to term)
Start date: September 2021


The general aim of this post is to sustain and improve the quality of training and education that is offered to the pupils in the Day School & Sixth Form.

The principle responsibilities of this post are:

  • To coach students in singing technique and repertoire in support of their musical training.
  • To support students through singing auditions for HE courses.

  • Grade 8 piano or equivalent standard


  • An efficient and effective teacher with evidence of first class teaching skills.
  • Excellent keyboard skills.
  • The ability to identify and solve vocal technique problems.
  • The ability to teach acting through song.
  • The ability to work with a wide range of abilities and confidence levels.
  • A thorough understanding of a variety of styles but in particular pop and musical theatre.


  • An excellent knowledge of singing repertoire.
  • A range of teaching pedagogy and strategies relevant to the teaching of the subject.
  • An excellent knowledge of all musical genres.
  • An excellent understanding of vocal anatomy, vocal technique and and suitable vocal repertoire for 11 to 18 year olds.
  • A knowledge of the requirements for singing auditions for UK and overseas HE musical theatre, acting, dance and contemporary music courses.
  • A thorough understanding of vocal health relating to young people.
  • Familiarity with current best practice.


  • Relevant teaching experience of 11-18 year-olds.
  • Experience of teaching in a specialist performing arts school or college.
  • Practical industry experience as a vocalist

  • To teach one to one singing lessons
  • To maintain and monitor appropriate records of pupils’ learning and achievements.
  • To maintain communication with the Head of Music & Head of Singing where necessary.
  • To write reports and respond to parents’ enquiries.
  • To implement the school’s agreed policies.
  • To attend meetings as appropriate.
  • To ensure that health and safety issues are properly understood and procedures followed effectively and consistently.
  • To meet all deadlines.
