Background to ArtsEd
ArtsEd originated from two schools, one founded in 1919 by Grace Cone and one founded in 1922 by Olive Ripman. These two educational pioneers believed passionately in the value of combining a general academic education with specialised training in dance, drama, music and art. They were committed to preparing young people for professional careers in or related to the theatre. In 1939, Grace and Olive joined forces to create the Cone Ripman School, subsequently named the Arts Educational Schools. Dame Alicia Markova and Sir Anton Dolin drew almost exclusively on ArtsEd students to help them create their revolutionary company London Festival Ballet, which eventually became the English National Ballet. Ballerina Dame Beryl Grey became Director of the Schools in the 1960s. ArtsEd continued to innovate, introducing both professional acting and musical theatre courses and in I986 moved to its present home in Chiswick. In 2007, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber became President, heralding an auspicious new era for ArtsEd. The School of Musical Theatre and School of Acting offer full-time BA and MA courses. Our Musical Theatre course is recognised as the best in the UK, while the Acting course is praised for its innovative 50:50 split between stage and screen acting. Our outstanding record of graduate success sees nearly every one of our Musical Theatre graduates and over three-quarters of our Acting graduates make their professional debuts within six months of graduating.
Summary of the Role
The general aim of this post is to sustain and improve the quality of English education that is offered to the pupils in the school. English (and English Literature) is a high-profile subject at this specialist independent school, and it is a very popular choice for our students at A level.
The ethos of the School is one of shared responsibility to which all teachers make a significant contribution, and it is vital that the teacher contributes throughout the year to the School’s strategic planning.
Artsed is a diverse, independent and specialist day school and sixth form. Arts is focused on providing high-level training for students who wish to pursue a career in the Performing Arts or who want to continue to enjoy a meaningful ongoing performance arts education while also excelling in a range of more traditional, University focused subjects, such as English Literature. Effective English teaching is a vital part of this training.
The English Department is a particularly strong one, and successful applicants would have the willingness to teach students aged 11 to 18, with exam classes following the AQA courses for both GCSE Language and Literature. A-Level English Literature students also follow a course provided by AQA, known as ‘Literature ‘A’.’
The posts would suit candidates who wish to develop their careers in a successful and nurturing department that enjoys significant support from the senior leadership team. Small class sizes and a supportive atmosphere underpin our practice. The school prides itself on the pastoral care it provides for students and there are often opportunities for professional development with remunerative incentives. Applications from EQTs would be welcomed.
There is also the potential for candidates to teach a second subject, albeit to a lesser degree.

To contribute to the planning, and teaching of the KS3 – KS5 syllabuses in English.
To design and implement strategies to enhance the learning experience for pupils, including regular conversation opportunities for pupils in order to measure their progress and achievement.
To teach a range of classes across all key stages
To maintain and monitor appropriate records of pupils’ learning and achievements
To design, develop and write suitable schemes of work for all Key Stages.
To write reports, attend parents’ meetings and respond to parents’ enquiries.
To rehearse students to be confident when performing and achieve success, be it for an exam or school production
To advocate for and implement the school’s agreed policies and procedures
To maintain effective discipline through the implementation of the school’ agreed procedures.
To take part in the performance management and appraisals programme.
To attend and make meaningful contributions to meetings as appropriate
To maintain liaison with classes’ and individual pupils’ form tutors.
To take on the pastoral responsibilities of a Form Tutor
To keep abreast of all exam specifications
To teach agreed schemes of work to KS3-5 classes.
To teach and assess in regards to the GCSE and A level specifications.
To ensure that curricular records and assessments are kept and reports written.
To mark all work set in relation to the established mark schemes.
To mark KS3 in accordance with the ArtsEd mark scheme.
To differentiate according to need throughout teaching modules, and to ensure extension tasks are provided for able, gifted and talented pupils.
To ensure that health and safety issues are properly understood and procedures followed effectively and consistently.
To support the work of pupils in preparing for oral examinations
FINANCE AND RESOURCES
To provide a list of examination and school trips disbursements when required by the Finance Director.

- All staff are required to regularly undertake Safeguarding, Keeping Children Safe in Education, Prevent, GDPR and health and safety training and to maintain their own professionalism and job-related knowledge through ongoing CPD.
- All members of staff are required to be professional, co-operative, and flexible in line with the needs of the post and the school.
- All Job Descriptions are reviewed annually and will change to reflect the needs of the School and the post.
