In Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, the Duke of Vienna temporarily leaves his corrupt city to a strict deputy, Angelo, who harshly enforces a law against premarital sex. When young Claudio impregnates his fiancée Juliet, Angelo condemns him to death. Claudio’s sister, novice nun Isabella, pleads for her brother’s life. Angelo, however, offers Isabella a monstrous deal: her virtue in exchange for Claudio’s freedom, forcing her to confront a complex moral dilemma about justice, power, and desire.
