Covent Garden’s Arts Theatre was abuzz yesterday as the School of Acting MA students took the stage, delivering an impressive series of performances for an audience of industry professionals, comprising of agents and casting directors/assistants.

The MA Showcase 2024, which kicked off with a welcoming drinks reception, saw 28 promising actors demonstrate their skills through a variety of solo and paired scenes.
Starting at 1pm, the event featured a dynamic lineup of 30 scenes, allowing each of the students multiple opportunities to shine in different roles. The diverse array of acts provided a comprehensive display of the students’ versatility and acting prowess.

Last night, ArtsEd’s School of Musical Theatre marked another milestone at the prestigious Olivier Awards, continuing a tradition that has showcased the talents of its students for over a decade. This year, the spotlight was on the 43 students from the 3rd Year School of Musical Theatre who performed at the celebrated event, held on April 14, 2024.
The 2024 Olivier Awards were not just a night of accolades but also a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the National Theatre. ArtsEd students performed as part of the choir in the finale, demonstrating their vocal prowess and collaborative skills in a high-profile setting.
Adding to the excitement, the ArtsEd alumni network was well-represented by Tom Francis, from the School of Musical Theatre class of 2020. Francis delivered a stunning performance in the “Sunset Boulevard” segment of the ceremony, supported by our 3rd Year students. His remarkable portrayal in the musical not only captivated the audience but also earned him the Best Actor in a Musical award, sharing the limelight with Nicole Scherzinger, who won Best Actress in a Musical.
Showcasing the event was two talented 3rd Year MT students who took over the school’s Instagram account, giving followers a behind-the-scenes look at the preparations and live excitement of the Olivier Awards. This engaging initiative provided a platform for our students to share their experiences and insights, connecting the ArtsEd community and broader public directly with the events of the night.

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we inform you of the death of our colleague and friend, Jade Allen. Jade passed away on Saturday 30th March surrounded by her loved ones.
Jade was a hugely talented, inspirational, and respected tutor within the School of Musical Theatre and the ArtsEd community, and she will be greatly missed by us all.
“We are all shocked and deeply saddened at the passing of our wonderful colleague and friend Jade Allen. Jade joined ArtsEd in 2022 as a Senior Acting Tutor for the School of Musical Theatre and brought a wealth of experience and expertise to the course.
Whatever she did, she filled the studios with joy and love. She will be greatly missed by staff and students alike and we extend our deepest sympathies to her husband Matt, and to all who knew and loved Jade”

ArtsEd proudly celebrated the achievements of its latest cohort of Part-Time Foundation students. This celebration recognised both Musical Theatre and Acting students, who completed their course on the 28th March 2024. The event was a vibrant affair, reflecting the hard work, dedication, and commitment of the students and their tutors.
A Journey of Growth and Discovery
ArtsEd’s Part-Time Foundation courses in Musical Theatre and Acting are uniquely designed to fit individuals who are passionate about pursuing a career in the performing arts while managing other commitments. Spread over two intensive terms, these courses are a deep dive into the essence of performance, offering rigorous training in the evenings and selected full Sundays. From singing technique and jazz, to acting through song and audition techniques, students are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the competitive world of performing arts. Working with esteemed and successful industry professionals across both courses.
Our Part-Time Foundation course is overseen by Maame Atuah, Head of Outreach and Short Courses. The Musical Theatre course, under the leadership of Luke Fredericks, and the Acting course, ran by James Westphal and Kristian Wall. Both courses have been heralded for their comprehensive curriculum and inclusive, supportive environment. These courses are not just about honing talent; they are about discovering one’s place in the world of theatre and film.
A Night to Remember
The celebration was a fitting finale to the students’ hard work, filled with, joy, laughter, and camaraderie.
Tutors James Westphal, Kristian Wall (Acting), and Luke Fredricks (Musical Theatre) were present to award certificates, sharing their pride and joy in their students’ accomplishments.
Attendees were treated to a reception of bubbly, soft drinks, and an assortment of food, making the evening a delightful experience marking the end of this chapter.

This year marks a significant milestone for the beloved musical “Pippin,” as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. The Theatre Royal Drury Lane is set to host a special anniversary concert that promises to breathe new life into the classic show. At the heart of this celebration is the director Jonathan O’Boyle, ArtsEd’s Director of the School of Musical Theatre. Jonathan’s vision brings together an amazing cast, including ArtsEd’s third-year BA (Hons) Musical Theatre (MT) students, serving as the choir, and ArtsEd graduates, including Jac Yarrow and Zizi Strallen, creating a bridge between the school’s past and future.
Under Jonathan O’Boyle’s direction, the production revisits his successful run with “Pippin” in London and Manchester in 2018. With rehearsals starting up for the final performances on April 29th and 30th, the cast and crew are immersed in bringing the musical’s magical story to life. The collaboration with musical director Chris Ma and casting director Jane Deitch ensures a high caliber of performance, set against the backdrop of one of London’s most iconic theatres.

Since its original Broadway debut in 1972, “Pippin” has enchanted audiences with its compelling story and captivating music by Stephen Schwartz and Roger O. Hirson. The original production, directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse, won five Tony Awards, establishing its place in the pantheon of musical theatre classics. The show’s revival in 2013 continued its legacy, winning four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical. Although smaller in scale, ArtsEd’s BTEC Musical Theatre Sixth Form students recently brought this incredible show to life at ArtsEd’s Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation Theatre here in Chiswick.

At ArtsEd, International Women’s Day is not only a moment to celebrate this year’s theme #inspireinclusion, but also a reflection of our beginnings—a school founded by the forward-thinking Grace Cone and Olive Ripman in the early 20th century. This year, the KS5 assemblies, led by Amy Whiterod, Deputy Director of Sixth Form, focus on ‘Female role models in our lives.’ Her aim is twofold: to recognise the invaluable influence of women in our immediate circles and to shine a light on the societal impact of female leaders and pioneers. Through her presentation, Amy encourages a celebration of achievements and a critique of persistent gender inequalities, advocating for a world where inclusion is not just an ideal but an everyday reality.
In the same spirit, the library’s monthly display draws attention to women’s narratives through a selection of powerful literature. The shelves are adorned with works like ‘The Penelopiad’ by Margaret Atwood and ‘Her Naked Skin’ by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, each book inviting students to explore the complex and compelling stories of women across time and space.

Within our Sixth Form, Year 13 Musical Theatre students are engaging with Carmel Dean’s seminal song cycle, ‘Well Behaved Women.’ This project, led by BTEC Musical Theatre Pathway Lead Giovanna Ryan, features an all-female group of performers who bring to life the stories of defiant and transformative women throughout history. From Boudicca to Harriet Tubman to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, ‘We Rise’—the closing number—honours their rebellious spirit and contributions. As part of International Women’s Day, the Student’s Union invited the ArtsEd community to wear purple this Friday (today)—a colour that heralds strength, power, justice, and dignity. To extend our solidarity beyond our attire, the Student’s Union are encouraging everyone to consider a small donation to the Pachamama Project. Founded by Ella Lambert, sister of ArtsEd degree student Luke Lambert, this charity has made a profound impact by providing over 100,000 handmade, reusable sanitary pads to those in need globally, aiding in the fight against period poverty. Let’s wear purple with purpose and support Pachamama’s mission to uplift and empower.
Taking positive steps towards inclusivity, ArtsEd is introducing free period products in all provisions across ArtsEd, recognising and accommodating the needs of all who menstruate. This initiative is not just about providing for a biological need but is a step towards eliminating period poverty and a statement of our commitment to the health and dignity of our students, further information on this to be shared soon.

In a heartwarming display of environmental stewardship, following over 2 years of temporary wall fixtures, the ArtsEd community recently came together to create a beacon of biodiversity and beauty with the establishment of a new community garden. This significant initiative saw students from the Day School & Sixth Form, Higher Education cohorts, esteemed alumni, and dedicated staff members rolling up their sleeves in a collective effort to make a tangible impact on their environment and further cement the bonds of the ArtsEd community.
On a day that, despite its dampness, was filled with vibrancy and a shared sense of purpose, the ArtsEd community planted an array of trees donated by the Woodland Trust. This carefully curated variety included the robust hawthorn, the resilient hazel, the graceful downy birch, the evergreen holly, and the captivating crab apple, each chosen not just for their aesthetic appeal but for their contribution to local biodiversity.
The planting was thoughtfully arranged and expertly guided by Abundance London (who also generously donated tools), with each tree finding its home along the garden’s beds, flanked by an impressive row of stately yew trees. This verdant initiative goes beyond merely beautifying the establishment; it is a testament to ArtsEd’s commitment to environmental responsibility and the nurturing of a community that grows together.
Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to all those who lent their green fingers and hearts to this project. Special thanks are extended to Mary Ann Parish, Head of Development and Daisy from the Development office, whose vision and dedication were instrumental in planting the seeds to a long lasting community garden. Their efforts promise not only to enrich our school’s landscape but to instill a legacy of environmental consciousness and engagement among the ArtsEd community.
We are eager to watch our garden evolve, with trees stretching skywards and blossoming flora, we are reminded of the potential for growth and healing green spaces offer. The Bush Theatre recently played host to an extraordinary showcase of talent as Year 13 Sixth Form students from ArtsEd took to the stage, presenting a diverse array of plays. Running from the 1st to the 3rd of February, these performances were the culmination of three months of hard-work and preparation that began in the lead-up to Christmas. Demonstrating remarkable creativity, the students themselves took the reins in conceptualising, directing, and editing pre-existing scripted works, in addition to crafting the overall visual aesthetic of their pieces.
This ambitious project is a core element of their A-Level Acting course, significantly contributing to their final examination. More than a mere academic requirement, this experience afforded the students an invaluable opportunity to immerse themselves in the professional theatre environment. Working alongside professional technical teams, they gained critical insights into the practical aspects of a career in the performing arts.
The showcase featured a rich tapestry of narratives, starting with “Edward Gaunt and his Amazing Feats of Loneliness,” a vaudeville-infused journey through tales of peculiar afflictions and heartache. Caryl Churchill’s “Escaped Alone” followed, presenting a poignant conversation among four women against the backdrop of a world on the brink of apocalypse.

In an evening marked by talent, creativity, and the promise of bright futures, Arts Ed proudly presented its annual 2024 BA Acting Graduate Showreels. Hosted at the prestigious Chiswick Cinema, the event showcased the exceptional work of its third-year acting students, who have dedicated their year to crafting professional showreels under the guidance of renowned industry professionals.
This exclusive event, traditionally closed to the wider public to maintain an intimate and focused atmosphere, welcomed over 100 guests this year, including students, staff, and the unique opportunity for each third-year student to bring a plus one. The evening was not just a celebration but a testament to the hard work, dedication, and talent of Arts Ed’s students.
Throughout their final year, these aspiring actors collaborated with industry writers, directors, and cinematographers to create two-minute professional showreels and short films. This hands-on experience prepares them for the competitive world of professional acting, offering a real-world glimpse into the industry’s demands and rewards.
This year’s showcase featured 14 captivating showreels, each a collaborative effort between pairs of third-year students. These pieces were revivals of acclaimed scenes from a mix of films and TV shows, demonstrating the students’ ability to bring fresh perspectives and unique interpretations to established works. The full list of showcased scenes includes titles such as “Survival of the Thickest,” “The Sister,” and “Behind Her Eyes,” among others, spanning genres and styles to highlight the diverse talents of the graduates.
“BA Acting Students at ArtsEd are offered a clear path to learning the craft of acting for screen. Screen acting classes are built into the curriculum from first year, followed by location shoots in second year.
Our graduating students then work with industry writers, directors, and cinematographers throughout their final year to create professional showreels and short films, putting into practise their training, and preparing them to enter the professional world.
