The corridors of ArtsEd are abuzz with excitement and pride as the opening night of “The Drowsy Chaperone” approaches on January 23rd. This eagerly awaited production has already marked a significant milestone by selling out within just a few days of ticket sales opening.

Winner of 5 TONY Awards, including Best Book and Best Original Score, “The Drowsy Chaperone” is a tribute to the Jazz Age musical, filled with laugh-out-loud comedy, show-stopping numbers, and captivating music by Lisa Lambert and Greg Morrison.

Directed by Philip Wilson, the production is expected to be a grand showcase of the students’ skills and hard work, featuring a unique double-cast that adds diverse flair to each performance.

This success comes hot on the heels of another ArtsEd achievement: the sell-out of “Rent,” which saw all tickets snapped up in under an hour. Directed by Tania Azevedo and set to be staged from February 6th to 10th, “Rent” has further cemented ArtsEd’s reputation for high-caliber student productions.

These consecutive sell-outs are not only a testament to the quality of ArtsEd’s productions but also to the enduring love and support for musical theatre.

Muisical Theatre Acting

This festive season, ArtsEd, added a melodious touch to the community’s Christmas celebrations with its inaugural Community Choir. This five-week community group, setup by Head of Development, Mary Ann Parish, Head of Outreach, Maame Atuah and led by the esteemed Musical Director Chris Huntley, brought together music enthusiasts from across the Chiswick community to learn, sing, and spread joy through the power of their voices.

A Choir for All Ages

Running every Tuesday in the lead-up to Christmas, the Community Choir was a testament to the inclusive spirit of ArtsEd. With participants ranging from 18 up to 72 years old, the choir represented a beautiful tapestry of the community, united by a shared passion for singing. The choir boasted 17 dedicated members, each bringing their unique sound and story to the ensemble.

Affordable, Accessible, and Heartwarming

At just £12 for the entire five-week community programme, the Community Choir was not only an artistic endeavour but also an accessible one, ensuring that the joy of singing and the warmth of community spirit were within reach of everyone. Chris Huntley’s expert guidance provided members with an opportunity to hone their vocal skills, learn the intricacies of musical theatre and Christmas songs, and experience the camaraderie and satisfaction that comes from singing in a choir.

Culminating in Cheerful Performances

The choir’s journey culminated in two heartwarming performances. The first, an intimate event at ArtsEd, allowed friends and family to witness the harmonious results of their loved ones’ dedication and hard work over the past 5-weeks. The second performance took place at the Santa Run at The Hogarth Club, where the choir’s festive repertoire, featuring three musical theatre songs and three Christmas classics, added a magical touch to the event.

“I joined the Community Choir because my daughter attends ArtsEd and I loved the idea of being able to attend something at her school.  I used to be in a choir but had to give it up so this was an ideal opportunity for me.

I really enjoyed being part of the choir, a lovely group of people and a very dedicated and supportive choir master.  We had some great songs to sing and it was such great fun.  We even got a break each evening with refreshments to chat and get to know each other.

A major shoutout to Charlie – a student at ArtsEd who helped make us feel welcome and organise the refreshments and support the singing.

Thanks also to MaryAnn who kept us up to date with emails and general organisation keeping things running smoothly. I really hope the choir can continue I will definitely be back”

ArtsEd alongside Chiswick Book Festival, last night, proudly hosted the much-anticipated ‘Chiswick Arts and Business Networking Drinks’, a vibrant networking event that brought together the local business and art community in an evening of performance, inspiration, and community spirit. With an impressive turnout of over 100 attendees representing 36 diverse businesses, the event was a resounding success, showcasing the unity and creative flair of Chiswick.

The highlight of the evening was the outstanding performance by our talented Sixth Form students (16-18), who captivated the audience with two beautifully rendered songs. Their performance not only showcased their artistic skills but also echoed the rich cultural ethos of ArtsEd.

In a series of engaging speeches, the essence of community and collaboration was highlighted by our esteemed speakers. Torin Douglas from the Chiswick Book Festival, Peter Middleton, Head Teacher at ArtsEd Day School & Sixth Form, and Mary Ann Parish, Head of Development at ArtsEd, all contributed their insightful perspectives, adding depth and context to the evening.

A special mention goes to our generous partners who added an extra layer of excitement to the event with their thoughtful contributions to the goodie bags and food for the evening. The Chiswick Cinema delighted many with a free cocktail voucher and popcorn, while The Post Room Café enhanced the mix with pastry-with-coffee vouchers, and the Chiswick Book Festival introduced the intriguing Winter Writers Trail. A unique touch was added by Harriet Benton from Harriet’s Kitchen, with her delightful Pepper Pots, as well as providing delicious food for the attendees. The Hogarth Club offered a few exclusive day passes and a much coveted one-month membership worth over £400.

As we approach the winter break, we want to inform our valued Arts Ed community about the temporary closure of our building.

From Tuesday, December 19th, 2023, to Wednesday, January 3rd, 2024, the ArtsEd building will be closed for the holiday season. During this period, please note that no staff will be working, and the building will be inaccessible to students, parents and the general public.

Here are the important details regarding the winter break closure:

1. Closure Dates:

• The Arts Ed building will be closed starting on Tuesday, December 19th, 2023.
• We will reopen on Wednesday, January 3rd, 2024.

2. Limited Access:

• Please be aware that no one will be available to assist with telephone, email or social media inquiries or provide access to the building during this period.

3. Online Resources:

• While the physical building will be closed, we understand the importance of continued access to resources. Many of our digital resources, including course materials and online support, will remain accessible throughout the closure via our website.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this seasonal pause. The closure is an opportunity for everyone to take a well-deserved break and recharge for the year ahead.

We look forward to welcoming you back to ArtsEd when we reopen on January 3rd, 2024, refreshed and ready to embrace the new year.

Deadlines for Day School & Sixth Form Applications are fast approaching.

Day School Admissions:

We audition everyone who applies to ArtsEd. The majority of pupils join the school in either Year 7 or 12, although we also welcome pupils into Years 8 and 9. As we start the curriculum for some of our key GCSE courses in Year 9, we are unable to accept applications for Year 10. References from the applicant’s current school and past school reports are also taken into consideration.

The deadline for Day School entry 2024 is: 7 February 2024 for auditions on 22nd February 2024

We are publishing this article in response to recent media coverage regarding culture at ArtsEd. You may be aware of the historic complaints raised in the press over the last number of weeks, and that further complaints and concerns have come to light since then.

These are serious allegations and do not reflect our values or the organisation we want to be.

The Board of Trustees have instructed Ghazaleh Rezaie, a barrister from 12 Kings Bench Walk Chambers, to undertake a review of the allegations and wider governance at ArtsEd.

While it is up to Ms Rezaie to agree and finalise the Terms of Reference, we are keen that this investigation is as broad and inclusive as possible, and that people have the opportunity to make their voice heard. We are determined to establish a clear account of the events and identify lessons to be learned based on the findings.

With that in mind, an independent email address has been established for anybody that wants to contribute to the investigation. enquiries@independent-investigation.com. We would encourage anybody, including all staff, students, parents and alumni to use this email address to contact Ms Rezaie.

We plan for work on the investigation to commence as soon as possible with interviews and evidence gathering in January 2024.

We hope that this statement and plan demonstrates how serious we are about holding the institution to account and how we should be determined at all times, no matter how difficult, to judge ourselves against the highest standards.

ArtsEd proudly announces that its 2019 acting graduate, Leo Woodall, will be gracing screens across the globe in the Netflix limited series “One Day.” Woodall, taking on the lead role of Dexter Mayhew, exemplifies the high calibre of talent nurtured at ArtsEd. The series, set to premiere on 8 February 2024, marks a significant milestone in Woodall’s rapidly ascending career.

Based on the bestselling novel by David Nicholls, “One Day” has already generated considerable buzz, thanks to its unique storytelling format and heartfelt narrative. The story, spanning several decades, follows Emma Morley (played by Ambika Mod) and Dexter Mayhew as they navigate their lives, reuniting on the same day each year.

Their journey is one of growth, change, joy, and heartbreak.

Kim Vithana, Director of the School of Acting at ArtsEd, shared her excitement about Woodall’s achievement:
